James w rogers Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 (edited) It's been a while since my last build whilst trying to choose what to build next! Love the look of this one, I hope to do it justice. Edited November 4, 2018 by James w rogers 7 Quote
Bernard Kelly Posted July 22, 2018 Report Posted July 22, 2018 Hi James Would this be the Phoenix that is usually in the dock at Charlestown, St Austell, Cornwall? I went aboard her when my brother lived down there. She is a fine ship and I wish you well in modelling her. 1 1 Quote

James w rogers Posted August 10, 2018 Author Report Posted August 10, 2018 That’s the bit that makes me cringe out the way, cutting the hull.? 6 Quote
James w rogers Posted September 12, 2018 Author Report Posted September 12, 2018 Back at it after a bit of a break, started some of the smaller Hull details. Also had started making the masts but thought I was going mad as they started to vanish into thin air! Finally discovered the culprit! ? 6 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 2, 2018 Author Report Posted October 2, 2018 As its my 3rd ship I thought I'd better make a concerted effort and add more details. 8 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 10, 2018 Author Report Posted October 10, 2018 Making futtocks. set some cereal box hard by soaking in superglue, then drilled holes for mast and cut and sanded to shape and glued in place. Just wish I'd tried it on my last build, so much easier! 7 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 10, 2018 Author Report Posted October 10, 2018 Crosstrees fitted, will shape them so they curve upwards when the glue is dry. 6 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 20, 2018 Author Report Posted October 20, 2018 Started to paint, using a mixture this time of acrylics and enamels. This is a nightmare for me as I've not got a steady hand! So will need a few touch ups here and there. Not looking forward to doing the black as the lines will have to be super straight for it to look right, any tips? ? 7 Quote
Onni Posted October 20, 2018 Report Posted October 20, 2018 Nice work James. Black lines are difficult. I usually use loads of masking tape and black spray paint but it can be a bit hit and miss affair. Some people just use black cotton glued to the hull which is probably a possible solution on a small model. 2 1 Quote

I would suggest gluing black thread or cut cotton strips. You can get different size threads or if even a larger thread is not wide enough you can cut strips of black paper. There is also modeling pinstripe tape. Jesse 1 1 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 20, 2018 Author Report Posted October 20, 2018 That's much appreciated, thanks for the replies, I'll definitely be trying the glued thread which also solves the problem I had trying to make the strip that runs along the Hull! ? 2 Quote
James w rogers Posted October 20, 2018 Author Report Posted October 20, 2018 So that was very fiddly! But we'll worth it, thanks for the advice. ? 7 Quote
bluenoser Posted October 21, 2018 Report Posted October 21, 2018 Was going to ask earlier. What kind of wood is that? 1 Quote
