DSiemens
So a friend at my local club brought in a few of these. I guess his dad used to own a modeling store and he has a lot of old inventory. I think this one was made for war gaming but I'm going to paint up the hull replace the masts and sails with wood and paper. The rig her up and bottle her. Any suggestions for paint on die cast models? JesseLee, Chasseur and Lord Nelson
Chasseur
If you go with a flat enamel you'll be good. If you use acrylics then you'll have to prime everything first. For a finished dark color prime in black and for light colours to make them pop go with a grey or white primer that's compatible with acrylics. CharlieB
I agree with Chasseur. When I was into figures, I always used acrylics. Bought most of mine at the local craft store.
Landlubber Mike
Consider using paints made for war gaming - War Hammer and Vallejo paints are very good. I painted some miniatures back in high school, and using primer was key. I'm not sure if the new paints have primer in them or not, but priming is probably necessary. Enjoy! Raindog
Thoroughly recommend Vallejo model colour acrylic. Dries so smoothly that you can paint lots of layers and lose very little detail....Dries quickly as well. JesseLee
exwafoo
Give the pieces a good wash with detergent and dry them without touching them with bare hands before undercoating. Use acrylic paints; get a small set of artists acrylics in tubes (much cheaper than buying pots of modeling paints), and mix your own colours (stacks of 'how to's on the net) using acrylic thinners (one bottle lasts a long time) - a number of thin coats beats one thick any time. Wash brushes out in water. Sails can be tinted using artists water colours. Al Chasseur
Lord Nelson
As far as the build is concerned, I did something similar using a plastic ship from a game. When it came to the masts I used a hinkley hinge for the main and thread glued to the bottom of the aft mast which was then pulled into the hole in the deck.
